Llanelli RFC v Pontypridd RFC@ Parc Y Scarlets
Llanelli were in commanding mood at Parc y Scarlets against the Premiership title contenders Pontypridd RFC. A complete first half performance saw Llanelli rattle up 18 points without reply with two superb individual tries from Nick Reynolds and Dale Ford. Outside half Steve Shingler (who has been putting extra work on his kicking game )slotted over two penalties and a conversion and can feel a little disappointed he has not made the Wales under 20s team to play England next week.
Such is the quality of Pontypridd you knew there was going to be a retaliation and they certainly delivered as they threw everything at Llanelli in the opening 20 minutes of the second period. Despite the Llanelli defence being at its best, Ponty captain Nathan Strong scored an excellent counter attack try , converted by Dean Gunter who also kicked a gift penalty and it was again game on!
However, with Nick Cudd standing out in a brilliant performance by the Llanelli forwards Ponty were not going to win this match. Things did n't help their cause when Nigel Whitehouse quite rightly sent flanker Rhys Lloyd to the bin in the 68th minute and Llanelli duly responded with an excellent executed try from the under-rated Shaun Hopkins which Shingler converted.
Ponty replacement Matthew Hutchins kicked a penalty in the 80th minute to end the match with Llanelli thouroughly deserving the 4 Principality Premiership points.
