The Seasons First Piece of Silverware Arrives!!!!
Llanelli RFC won the first (and hopefully not the last) piece of silverware of the season after picking up the Plate at the Cwmtawe 7's this afternoon.
In a strong competition, the semi-pro side were drawn with the Tongan Barbarians and the Young Ospreys. In the first game against the Tongans, Llanelli emerged victorious by a margin of 22 points to 17. In the next game, youthful energy proved the difference as the Young Ospreys emerged victors by 24 points to 10, meaning that Llanelli were sent into the Plate competition.
In the quarter final of the Plate, Llanelli were drawn to play Carmarthen Warriors and won with a scoreline of 27-17. In the semi-final, Mel's Exiles were the opponents, and Llanelli won by six tries to two and a scoreline of 32 points to 14.
The final proved a fiery encounter against the South African Scorpions. Llanelli were forced to play for two separate periods with six men after Justin James and Luke Richards both received yellow cards. However, this had no bearing on the result as Llanelli won by 45-14.
The icing on the cake for the club was made as Luke Jones was named most promising player of the tournament.
The squad for the tournament was as follows:
Luke Jones, Simon Peters, Craig Hawkins, Justin James, Luke Richards, Nick Reynolds, Liam Gadd, Nicky Jones, Mathew Jacobs, Mike Davies, Andrew Banfield.
Our next fixture is a friendly away to Blackwood RFC on Saturday 16th August.
